1412 South Blvd., was the historic home once owned by the late President Emeritus of renowned University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, John Mendelsohn, M.D.

Even with homes in such high demand, the city is sprawling with show-stopping estates, and we've been on the hunt to find them. This week, a historic Museum District residence with a second-floor wrap-around porch and open concept pool house has hit the market, and we're predicting it will close soon. Here's a sneak at this $4 million museum mansion.

This stunning home was once held by the late President Emeritus of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, John Mendelsohn, M.D. Mendelsohn served as the third president of M.D. Anderson for fifteen years, ending his tenure in 2011. The home first hit the market in 1996, when Dr. Mendelsohn began his tenure.  Now up for grabs for eager homebuyers, the listing has been on the market for 27 days.

The property is listed by Marnie Greenwood of Compass Realty, who says the South Boulevard home is a rare find. "These types of properties don't change hands often," Greenwood tells Houstonia. "It's an honor to represent such an important piece of Houston architecture and a family that has contributed significantly to our community."

Its classical design is evocative of a wealthy country club, with dominating pillars encompassing all four sides of the main home and the oak-lined avenue that leads up to the massive horseshoe driveway. For a second, you may believe that you're attending high tea or perhaps a polo game in the fully fenced backyard. Either way, the corner lot home's stunning exterior is a head-turner.

Initially built in 1940, the charming colonial-style property is spread across 38,295 square feet and is complete with three bedrooms and six and a half bathrooms. The home's interior holds intentional colonial details but still maintains a modern touch. The clear stained glass windows in the library usher in an added brightness and include built-in bookshelves, a marble fireplace, plus an opening that leads to the serene sunroom.

In the entryway, you'll find a large formal dining room with a striking chandelier as the focal point and a wooden staircase stitched with European carpeting that winds up to the dazzling second floor with an enclosed terrace that overlooks Broadacres, a City of Houston Historic District developed in the 1920s.

The cozy living room area rug stretches across the room, and the windows bring in just the right amount of sunlight. What adds to the traditional elegance, though, is the home's second marble fireplace.

Something to marvel at is the chef's kitchen, in which the wooden decor adds a down-home feel, with a built-in double electric oven and accompanying built-in stove on the island. It also features a walk-in pantry, five wall cabinets, and plenty of drawers to store your cooking necessities.

The two-story dwelling is a property perfect for entertaining. The resort-style pool is gated and includes a covered cabana and outdoor bar: just what you need for the hot summer months. Plus, the pool comes with an adjoining pool house and a concrete slab for a game of outdoor basketball.
